My entree into the "Draw this Again Competition". I will be uploading the before and after MEME shortly
I chose this piece to redo because I have always HATED how it turned out. I had this vision in my mind of a literal interpretation of the song and I just was not at the skill level required to portrait that. I even went as far as to purposely hide the hands behind branches... :hides in shame:
Since then, I have worked hard to do more studies and learn from my peers. I have challenged myself to draw things I knew I wasn't very good at, because i knew it would make me a better artist (even if it wasn't fun at the time). And for the first time I can sit down and draw something and spend 95% of the time actually DRAWING and not TRYING TO FIX MISTAKES. I am beginning to simply draw what I want to draw, and not hide my weaknesses behind props or clothes. I am starting to be able to create without compromising my vision because of lack of skill.
To me, this is what being an artist is all about, the relentless pursuit of perfection, whatever that means on an individual level. And embracing that even though perfection will never be truly realized, that you gave it your all to get what is in your head onto paper. And day by day, to get better and better at making the paper reflect more clearly that image in my head.
I could have easily rested on what I knew, and remained at that comfort level in 2009. But I made the uncomfortable choice to practice the boring stuff and it has freed me in a way I simply cannot describe. I am truly thankful to all those other artists (and stock photographers) that have inspired me, pushed me, and believed that I was capable of more than I was allowing myself to be at that time.
This piece is dedicated to my loving boyfriend
who has inspired me more and more to be a better artist since the day I met him.
And these amazing stock artists
who have freely given of their time and talent to help inspire artists like me every day.
Dammit now i'm crying! LOL I just can't believe how far this journey has taken me as an artist and a person. I know I still have a long road ahead of me, but I can see where it's leading and that gives me pure bliss.
